Dad’s 80th Birthday

This morning, my kids, husband and I, all gathered round my computer screen and joined a zoom birthday meeting to celebrate my fathers 80th. We all sang ‘happy birthday’ and watched my father blow out his candles, and eat 2 slices of cake. The cake was from the cafe where I used to work and Gus and I first met, Brunetti. My mouth was watering as I watched my family eat the cake!

Last year in January I had set a goal to be in Australia to celebrate my father’s 80th birthday. But in April we were told that Dad’s cancer had grown and was spreading and was given months to live. So, I decided to organise my trip earlier than expected so I could spend some time with my dad.

I was sad not to be physically present around the kitchen table where as a family we shared so many meals, had numerous discussions about life and the world. But also grateful of the fact that we have such technology like zoom and whats app so we can share these precious moments with our loved ones.

Dad looked tired, but it looked as if he enjoyed his cake. I wasn’t sure what to buy him as a gift, so in the end, because my dad has been wearing socks to keep his feet warm, I found a company that print faces on socks. I sent them a photo of my brother, sister and I when we were little and got them to print the faces on the socks. I chose a bright pink sock, to add some colour to the day. I got the kids to make cards, but failed to send them. Mum said in mid January she finally got my Christmas card which I sent in early December. Australia are strict, they quarantine post as well as people!

I kind of hope that I may make the journey to Australia again, before the year is up and may even share a game of chess with my father. It’s possible, and today I’ll hold onto that hope.

Happy 80th dad, you made it to the next new decade. Although I know in your heart you are still 21! Love you dad.
